How to transfer data from one environment to another using Xrm Toolbox
migration can get really tedious and complicated when you have complex entities with related records of other entities. And although we have Configuration Migration tool to facilitate such migrations but there’s another and much easier solution. So, let's see how we can achieve that using Xrm Toolbox. Now, if you don’t already know what’s the Xrm Toolbox is, it’s a Dynamics/Power Platform community supported software which acts like a library for every type of tool that you might need to achieve your goal. So, go ahead and download it from here: https://www.xrmtoolbox.com/ and once it is downloaded open it and search for “Data Transporter” in the Xrm Toolbox tool library. Click on the Data Transporter and then click on Install.
After installing it, open the tool from the homepage of the Xrm Toolbox. Now when you open it for the first time it’ll ask you to create a connection first. You’ll need to create two connections for the tool to work for the moment, one is the Source connection which will be connected to your source environment from where the data will be migrated. And the other will be Target connection for the environment to which the data needs to be migrated. The connection making process is every straight forward so we won't dive into that. After setting the Source and Target connection your screen will look something like this:
From here the process is really easy, just select which entity’s data you want to migrate to and click on Transfer Data. Let’s see one example of our custom entity Action. Once I click on the entity, it will show all its attributes from which I can also select which attribute’s data I want to transfer.
Now as I will be creating new records I will only select Create in the top right corner.
After that, just click on Transfer Data, sit back and relax while the Data Transporter do all the work for you!
